ALL ASIA Pacific Economic Co-operation(APEC) countries will become members of the ATA Carnet System by the end of this year. The APEC sub-committee on customs procedures is determined that all APEC economies adhere to the Carnet system by the year 2000.
To achieve this goal, APEC held two regional advisory/training missions on temporary import actions and the ATA Carnet in Taipei and Beijing in March. The objective was to review in detail the operation of the ATA Carnet System and actively support the efforts of the APEC governments to promote adherence to it by additional countries, such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
These events, says Glennalee Hayselden of the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, offered an excellent opportunity for both ATA experts and chambers of commerce in the APEC region to work together with customs administrations to demonstrate the benefits of the ATA scheme, and encourage them to join the system.
The ATA Carnet system allows duty free entry of temporary imports into member countries.
