SHIPPING COMPANIES and the transport industry are two of the three major target markets of the R5million grease plant which Total South Africa has opened as part of a R10million extension to its existing blend plant in Durban.
The plant will produce greases used primarily in products like bearings and gearboxes with heavy engineering its third target market. But a major export drive is also envisaged.
The grease plant will enable Total SA to eliminate imports, says Anil Mooloo, operations manager of Total SA consumer products. enhancing the company's competitiveness and allowing for considerable cost reduction. Grease was previously imported from the company's British plant.
The plant, he says, will produce 3000 tons of grease a year, two-thirds of which will be exported, with an aggressive export drive aimed at sub-Saharan Africa.
The plant places Total in a strategic position to supply all of the company's sub-Saharan requirements, with sufficient reserve to supply other export markets, he said.
