The World Bank Group has joined forces with Surveya Global to undertake a study among South African owners and managers of trading firms, customs brokers, and freight forwarders engaged in cross-border trade to identify the barriers they face.
Findings of the study will inform the design of trade facilitation reforms to maximise gains from trade for all stakeholders, says the Bank.
“This is especially critical in light of the Covid-19 pandemic as unimpeded trade can limit its negative impacts - both in the short term and in the economic recovery process.”
The targeted participants include South African firms engaged in imports, exports and/or transit of goods across any international land, air, or sea border.
Firms will be surveyed to determine whether constraints are overarching for all traders or whether they are gender-specific.
It was launched last month after its success in East Asia Pacific, with ongoing efforts in the Philippines and Brazil.
Participants have been given the assurance that all responses and identities of respondents will be kept anonymous and confidential, and data will be reported at an aggregate level.
