Gauteng is developing a digital mobility platform aimed at improving the coordination of passenger and freight transport, reducing congestion and supporting more efficient movement of goods and people across the province.
The initiative forms part of the Gauteng Transport Authority's mobility-as-a-service programme, which seeks to integrate transport operations, data and services into a single digital ecosystem.
A fragmented transport system was contributing to congestion, economic inefficiencies and delays in the movement of goods and services, Gauteng Transport Authority acting general manager for Intelligent Transport Systems Nyiko Nkuna said.
"The desired state in the province is to have an integrated, efficient, accessible, reliable, sustainable and affordable mobility system," he said.
A key component of the programme is a Smart Mobility Centre, which will monitor the transport network in real time, coordinate incident response and improve operational collaboration across transport operators, including freight.
The programme includes a central transport data platform that will consolidate information on routes, operators and transport services, providing a single source of information to support integrated planning, operational management and future investment decisions.
Nkuna said the province was also developing an account-based ticketing system that would allow commuters to use a single payment platform across multiple modes of public transport.
The overall mobility-as-a-service programme is about 29% complete, with progress under way on the Smart Mobility Centre, the integrated data platform, passenger service channels and the account-based ticketing system. Funding constraints, stakeholder alignment and changes in project scope remained the main implementation challenges, Nkuna said.
