US$2.71 government bailout for troubled railway operator

The Tanzanian government will bail out the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) with an amount of US$$2.71 million, to be paid out over the next two weeks, according to news reports.

The railway line is a key route for copper exports through the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

AllAfrica.com cited Tazara head of public relations, Conrad Simuchile,  as saying in a statement that the government had also confirmed that all employees of the authority were effectively on the civil service payroll, as from last month.
