Last month saw the launch
of Johannesburg’s newly
upgraded K46 road (William
Nicol highway) into a triple
carriageway. The second phase,
linking it to the N14 freeway,
will be launched within this
financial year.
Gauteng Premier David
Makhura, speaking at the
launch, said that the
R422- million project formed
part of the Gauteng Department
of Roads and Transport’s
objective to improve the
northern corridor.
“The developers of Steyn
City – which is set to be the
largest parkland residence
in Gauteng, located
off the William Nicol
highway – injected
one third of the funds
into the multi-million rand
project, while the remainder has
been part of the budget of the
Gauteng Department of Roads
and Transport,” explained
Makhura.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and
Transport, Ismail Vadi, said:
“This is a high traffic volume
road that needed to be upgraded
to facilitate ease of movement
and it ref lects the provincial
government’s commitment to
promoting safe transport.”
He said that the project also
included the demolition of the
existing Jukskei River Bridge and
construction of two new bridges
crossing the Jukskei River.
