Up to ten Western Cape freight operators are being invited to participate in a fully funded pilot of a new Road Transport Management System digital toolkit.
The toolkit is designed to help businesses improve vehicle maintenance, driver management, safety, record-keeping, fleet management and compliance, according to a Western Cape Mobility Department statement.
Guidance, templates, self-assessment tools, training resources and improvement-planning support are provided in one place to help operators assess their systems and identify areas for improvement.
The initiative is aimed particularly at small and medium-sized freight operators that may find preparing for RTMS certification difficult or time consuming.
The toolkit does not replace RTMS certification, while participation in the pilot will not constitute an audit or enforcement exercise, the department points out.
Participating companies will receive free access to the toolkit during the pilot, along with departmental support to introduce and use its resources.
Moosa’s Group in Milnerton is among the first companies to test the toolkit in its daily operations. Feedback from participating operators will be used to refine it before it is made more widely available.
The pilot would provide operators with practical support to strengthen their safety and operational management, Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku said.
“We know that running a transport business comes with many demands. This initiative is about making it easier for operators to access the tools and information they need to improve their businesses,” he said.
