Dear Editor,

I refer to your article headlined Groupage operator claims unfair competition on Tanzanian route (FTW June 12, 1998).
Specialised International Freight, as accredited agents for the Tanzania Central Freight Bureau, would like to set the record straight regarding shipments to Tanzania and quote the contents of a letter received from Mr Bernard Mbakileki, director general, Tanzania Central Freight Bureau.
I have had opportunity to review both your letter and the article carried in the FTW of Friday, 12 June, 1998.
At the outset I would like to confirm the correctness of the position taken by SIF as TCFB's agents. All cargo destined to Tanzania is overseen by TCFB through its network of agents. In the case of South Africa SIF are our accredited agents. The corporate mission of TCFB and its overseas agents is to secure the most competitive freight costs for transportation of traffic depending on the prevailing market situation. Naturally we are interested to secure freight rates tending from market related to discounted and preferential rates. Hence during my recent inspection visit I took the opportunity to conclude a preferential consolidation rate with Ecu Line of South Africa.
The agreement signed on 8th May 1998 does not foster monopoly or exclusivity. Rather so long as Ecu Line is offering the best rate it makes commercial sense for TCFB and SIF to insist on Ecu Line's service being used for the advantage of Tanzania importers.
On the other hand, Export Consolidation Services are welcome to compete by matching or even offering a better rate than that of Ecu Line.
This is what competition is all about and we invite other consolidators to compete with Ecu Line.
I look forward to getting news about other serious consolidators coming forward to compete in a fair and transparent manner.
Anyone wishing to trade with Tanzania should contact Specialised International Freight in Durban prior to booking the cargo for shipment. Over the past four years we have advertised in FTW urging all parties to contact ourselves to avoid penalties.
