Presidents of neighbouring countries Uganda and Rwanda have signed an extradition treaty aimed at putting an end to disruptive activities by their respective nationals. The meeting came almost a year after Rwanda closed the border with Uganda, barring Rwandan citizens and goods from travelling to Uganda and vice versa.
According to reports, “Presidents Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame together with the heads of state of Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) met at the main border crossing between the two nations”.
The four leaders agreed that the Ugandan President would verify Rwandan claims of hostile activities on their border. According to reports, talks about opening borders and normalising relations will commence once president Museveni verifies the hostile claims.
Goods traders have sued the Kampala and Kigali governments over shuttered crossings that are harming their livelihoods. - Zoë van Rooyen
