Strong growth in airfreight seen at HKIA

Hong Kong International Airport is one of the world’s busiest cargo gateways.

The Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded substantial growth in its cargo throughput in May this year, according to information released yesterday (Sunday).

The airport achieved a significant increase of 12.9%, to 409 000 tonnes, in comparison with May of 2016, which it attributed to strong growth in exports (recording a year-on-year increase of 21%).

During the first five months of 2017, cargo volumes handled at HKIA registered a year-on-year rise of 11.3% and on a rolling 12-month basis the airport handled 4.71 million tonnes of cargo.

Among HKIA’s key trading regions, Europe and North America showed the most significant growth.
