A crew transfer vessel capsized in the outer anchorage off the Port of Beira, Mozambique, while approaching the Sea Quest, a Marshall Islands-flagged product tanker managed by Scorpio Marine Management.
The vessel was carrying 21 people, including 14 sailors due to sign on as new crewmembers for the Sea Quest, along with technical staff and the vessel’s own crew, Maritime Executive reports.
According to company and media reports, ten people were rescued following the incident. Three of those rescued required medical attention aboard the tanker, although their current conditions have not been publicly confirmed.
Search and rescue operations remain ongoing, with seven individuals still missing, among them five incoming crew members, one technician, and one crewmember of the transfer vessel. Nearby ships in the anchorage, together with local maritime authorities, have joined the continuing rescue effort.
In a statement, Scorpio Marine Management confirmed that it was in direct contact with the families of those involved and had launched a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
The Sea Quest, built in 2012 and acquired by its current owners in 2024, had been anchored off Beira after arriving from the United Arab Emirates. Weather conditions at the time of the incident have not yet been confirmed.
While early reports varied slightly, with some sources suggesting up to 14 survivors, official details remain under review as search efforts continue in the area.
