Portnet is to spend R15 million during this current year on improving port security, according to Dr Sipho Nyawo, Transnet's executive director responsible for Portnet and Autonet.
Sihle Mbongwa has been appointed specifically to handle this matter and minimise losses and ensure safe deliveries. Nyawo was addressing a gathering of business and political leaders in Durban recently. He said that Portnet had budgeted R100 000 for maritime training, to change the industry from being the domain of a select privileged few and to introduce the historically excluded groups. This project would target KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape, while at secondary level Portnet will implement accredited multi-disciplinary maritime courses at several schools. The first courses will commence in the next school year at Tisand School in KwaZulu Natal.
