By Terry Hutson King Goodwill Zwelithini has suggested that names of ports in South Africa should be changed to better reflect local and historical names that his people could relate to.
Addressing a meeting of business and political people in Durban recently, the king suggested that the names of Durban and Richards Bay were not reflective of the Zulu nation. He thought that a name such as Khangela, as used for the area by King Shaka would be more appropriate than Durban, while Richards Bay could perhaps be altered to Amangwe, in honour of King Cetshwayo's palace of that name in the area.
According to the king a review of current names should now be initiated. The popular Zulu name for Durban is usually given as Thekwini, which is a description of the lagoon or bay. The traditional Zulu name for Richards Bay is Cwebeni, meaning Ôlagoon or Ôlarge expanse of water'
