South Africa is experiencing its worse drought in 23 years – as a result of the El Nino weather pattern – causing a severe reduction in corn, wheat and sugar production.
South African maize farmers intend to plant 2.55 million hectares in the 2016 season, the lowest level since 2011, according to Reuters.
Bloomberg reported that over 500 000 people in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal are facing severe hunger as a result of the drought, according to humanitarian organisation World Vision.
To help mitigate this, Denmark and South Africa will sign a memorandum of understanding next month, allowing private sector companies in both countries to provide solutions for water resource management, according to Farmers Weekly.
