The SA Association of Freight Forwarders has entered into a joint training initiative with Customs. It’s a win-win deal for both sides with the industry being trained by expert Customs officials while Customs staff will receive training on matters that will improve their knowledge and understanding of the workings of commerce. According to Saaff, a change in management within Customs has seen an entirely different approach being adopted to stakeholder relations and the resolution of problems. “Regular meetings are resulting in active support from the administration,” a Saaff spokesman told FTW. “There are however several unresolved issues such as inconsistency in the application of penalties, lack of consultation in the preparation of the new Customs bill and transformation challenges to mention a few.”
