A DISPLAY of over 100 South African products went on show at 40 of Spain’s El Corte Ingles department stores last week and will run until June 11. It’s part of a South African promotion launched by deputy minister of trade and industry Lindiwe Hendricks. The products range from crafts, wines, gifts and cushions to blankets, clothes, and cutlery. The dti, which worked with El Corte Ingles on the project, assisted 10 crafters – including bead workers, artists, and wire bangle makers - to travel to Spain. They are working on site and demonstrating their abilities for the Spanish public. According to Hendricks the promotion will see ties between Spain and South Africa being strengthened. Already El Corte Ingles has purchased R30 million worth of goods from the South African suppliers, with more purchases likely in the near future. The promotion will also see South Africa being marketed as a destination for Spanish tourists.
