Rwanda increases its Dar es Salaam port volumes

Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam port on the Central Corridor has doubled its volume of Rwandan cargo handled in the last two years, as the port overtakes its rival Mombasa port in Kenya.

The Tanzania International Container Terminal (TICTS) reports that at least 70% of all deep-sea cargo to and from Rwanda passes through Dar es Salaam port.

A delegation led by TICTS chief executive officer, Paul Wallace, visited Rwanda and was accompanied by representatives from the Tanzania Freight Forwarders’ Association, Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency, and Tanzania Shipping Agents’ Association.

The delegation discussed a major reconstruction project to be managed by Tanzania Ports Authority which involved significant upgrades to the port, road and rail infrastructure, highlighting that the project would be co-financed by the World Bank, the Department for International Development and Trademark East Africa, reported Tanzanian national newspaper, Daily News.

The project includes US$53 billion of private investment in new port cranes, and US$65 billion to be spent on additional new cranes and infrastructure, ahead of a much greater privately financed expansion planned for 2017 onwards.
