RAY SMUTS ROOIBOS TEA, now universally regarded as exclusively South African – it grows nowhere else – is set to make the big time in the United States as demand for the product soars. Now suppliers of the nutritious tea are preparing for strong growth in the Land of the Stars and Stripes. Martin Bergh, MD of Rooibos Ltd, tells FTW exports to the US currently amount to some 400 to 500 tons a year but growing to 3 000 tons or perhaps even more is in not improbable. Germany is still the biggest importer with around 3 500 tons, the US (500 tons) Holland (600 tons) and Japan (400 tons). The value of the export product (at bulk level) is R120 million at the domestic level and R70 million (at bulk level).
