On Wednesday the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) received the final resignations of the remaining South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) board members following an ongoing internal dispute.
The board members cited a lack of urgency and support from Mineral resources minister, Gwede Mantashe, as one of the primary reasons for their resignations.
However, Mantashe and the Ministry hit back at critics, saying that since the start of his term one of his key responsibilities had been to stabilise entities within the minerals and energy portfolio.
The department is already actively seeking replacements with a list of potential candidates ready to be submitted to government, according to a statement released by the department on Wednesday.
“A list of proposed names for the Necsa Board has been finalised for submission to Cabinet for concurrence. It is the Department’s intention to see a stable Necsa in the current financial year,” it stated. – Bjorn Vorster
