Refocused Katlego sees big export growth

Charter business pumps up volumes JOY ORLEK KATLEGO GLOBAL Logistics has refocused and restructured to concentrate on its core business of clearing and forwarding for imports and exports with specific focus on the southern African region. The company now outsources its warehousing and local distribution needs, retaining 10 trucks which are used exclusively for its own import customers. The formula is working, says managing director Moses Maboi, who reports an encouraging increase in new business for this growing BEE success story. “Imports have grown significantly on the back of the weaker rand and we’re also taking on board a lot of new export business.” Some 60-70% of Katlego’s business now comprises exports and that’s the kind of ratio Maboi wants to see. “Charter business has also grown significantly, into Africa as well as UN business into Iraq and Afganistan. “We have benefited substantially from government’s increased support for SMMEs (small and medium enterprises). They’re now breaking contracts into units to enable smaller enterprises to participate in large tenders, and this has opened up several new doors for us.” Katlego celebrates its 8th anniversary this year, with a national network that includes Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban.
