KwaZulu-Natal police recovered counterfeit goods with an estimated street value of R400 million at a freight warehouse south of Durban on Tuesday.
South African Police Service spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said officers had discovered the cargo, which included counterfeit Louis Vuitton, Nike and Gucci fashion clothing and shoes, and Le Creuset pots, during a routine check of a depot in Edwin Swales Drive.
“Police were doing a routine cargo profiling when they found two containers which contained counterfeit designer clothes, jewellery and kitchenware,” said Netshiunda.
“Both containers were fraudulently declared to be carrying furniture. Preliminary investigations have found that the containers entered the country from an Asian country and the cargo was destined for Alberton and central Johannesburg in Gauteng Province.”
Netshiunda said a police investigation was under way to find the suspects responsible for importing the counterfeit goods.
