The extent to which the oil and gas sectors can benefit trade between South Africa and Nigeria came under the spotlight during recent a working visit to Nigeria by mineral resources and energy minister Gwede Mantashe.
Nigeria is a substantial supplier of crude oil to South Africa.
The minister visited the West African country to meet with his Nigerian counterpart, Chief Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum resources in Abuja.
“The visit will impact positively on investment between our countries and assist our government's commitment to ensure security of energy in South Africa,” said the minister.
He stressed the need for mutual trade and investment. “This will be achieved by tapping into our existing capacities and capabilities.”
Mantashe also paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
