THE NATIONAL Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has sent out a call for used lifejackets to be redistributed in Uganda.
While it is a virtually landlocked country, thousands drown annually in Lake Victoria.
“It is tragic that Lake Victoria has arguably the highest drowning statistics (per square metre) in the world. Fortunately the lake is warm so hypothermia is not a problem and since the water is drinkable, dehydration is also not a complication - but floatation devices are desperately needed,” NSRI CEO Ian Wienburg told FTW.
The National Lake Rescue Institute has been established but many of the lake users are unable to swim and drown before help can be called.
