AFTER A fairly sluggish start to the year, business is brisk for roadfreight specialist Discount Freight.
The stronger rand took its toll last year, according to managing director Jakes Ambaram. “But now that the elections are over in South Africa and Malawi, one of our specialist markets, we’re being inundated with work.
“It’s a contract we quoted on last year that is now coming together,” says Ambaram, “moving the usual wide range of consumer goods into Malawi.” As one of the largest consolidators into Malawi, Discount Freight operates at least two to three consolidations a week on the route.
“But growth in Zambian volumes has seen the launch of a weekly consolidation service to Zambia, which is picking up nicely,” said Ambaram.
“Our areas of focus are Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique, and those are the destinations on which we will continue to focus.
“We’ve been in business for 13 years and have always taken a very focused approach.”
While his track record speaks volumes, Ambaram believes that an additional competitive advantage is the company’s BEE status. “We are one of the few 100% privately-owned BEE companies which is now an important prerequisite in certain business tenders.”
