Uncertainty prevails around the movement of high cube containers. From January 1 next year, the movement of high cube containers in the country will be restricted to a height of 4.3m as per the current legislation. Measuring 2.9m, high cube containers when transported on the back of a normal transport vehicle exceed the height of 4.3m as prescribed by South African law and measure in at around 4.6m. While a moratorium is currently in place, it is unclear what will happen at the end of this year when it expires. Industry has made it clear they do not want another moratorium as the issue has been lingering since 2011 when the first moratorium was signed on the matter. “Our argument remains and is still not resolved – and that is that we don’t want another moratorium. We want the regulation to be rewritten,” said Mike Walwyn, a freight forwarder and chairman of the Cape’s Port Liaison Forum.
