Nigerian port strike draws to an end

Normal activities will resume at Nigeria’s ports today after the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) suspended strike action after two days.

The strike set out to protest the unpaid wages of about 3 000 tally clerks and on-board security personnel, midstream discharging of vessels and using foreigners in violation of the law, reports Nigeria-based newspaper Vanguard.

The union accused the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) of undermining Nigeria’s economic interest due to inconsistent compliance with rules and regulations.

In response to the strike action, a joint communiqué was issued by NPA finance executive director, Olumide Oduntan, and the president-general of MWUN, Anthony Nted, announcing the suspension of the protest.
