New Gauteng eKasiLab launched to facilitate manufacturing

Monday saw the launch in Johannesburg’s West Rand of the ‘eKasiLab’, an initiative of the Mohlakeng Innovation Hub, aimed at supporting township entrepreneurs in the manufacturing and ICT industries.

As a partnership between the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) and the West Rand District Municipality, the eKasiLab vision was to ensure that what was offered in Mohlakeng was of better quality than what was offered in any other area in the province, said Innovation Hub CEO, McLean Sibanda.

“Our focus is to look at challenges that young people face on a daily basis in the townships and allow them to innovate and come up with ideas that can help us in developing those solutions that make these townships even better,” he said.

According to Sibanda, the Gauteng government’s target is to have seven eKasiLabs by the end of March 2017, and to have more than 10 by 2019.
