Volumes through the new Kenyan port of Lamu are being secured as construction begins on what is planned to become the new gateway for East Africa. According to the Ugandan foreign minister, the presidents of Uganda and Kenya have agreed to the construction of an oil pipeline to the Kenyan port of Lamu for the export of newly discovered oil reserves in the Ugandan Lake Albertine Rift basin and Kenya. The pipeline is also expected to link with oil fields in South Sudan, which will end the country’s reliance on its neighbour Sudan for its crude shipments.
