In Mozambique, a R150 million investment in the construction of a new bridge will allow the Goba railway line to increase its load capacity from 2.5 to 5 million tonnes a year in 2017, according to state port and rail company CFM.
On the line connecting the Matsapha Industrial Park in central Swaziland with the Port of Maputo, the new railway bridge over the River Umbeluzi will be capable of supporting wagons weighing up to 27 tonnes per axle, compared to 20t on the old bridge – which will no longer be used as it is operating at below-minimum safety standards.
It will therefore mean that trains of up to 100 wagons will be able to use the line, compared to a current maximum of 50.
