Safcor has recently moved its air export division into dedicated premises in Isando to meet customers' increasing demands for a one-stop shop for their goods, said Wally Hoddinott, export manager for Safcor in Johannesburg.
We believe this reflects the explosive growth which has occurred in airfreight exports particularly to the rest of Africa. There is little doubt that Johannesburg is now regarded by the major centres as the prime gateway to sub-Saharan Africa, he said.
Internationally, Safcor was finding exports in the motor industry a huge growth area, as a result of the Government's motor industry programme.
Generally exports continue to grow and we are excited about it, he said.
Increase of traffic into Africa was also growing continuously.
The South African market is closer, cheaper and is growing. Also contributing to this is the fact that many South African companies have major projects in other African countries, especially in the mining and telecommunications fields. The trend started in 1994 and has picked up enormously, said Hoddinott.
East Africa and other ex-colonial countries were particularly growing but this was moving into West Africa as well, he said.
