Algeria’s department of transport has announced that the construction of a new container port is due to start in the first quarter of next year and to be completed by 2020/21. Sited at El Hamdania, 80 kilometres west of the Algerian capital of Algiers, the new port is to have a capacity of 6.5 million TEUs.
The R45.4-billion project is to be carried out by China State Construction Corporation (CSCEC) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), which will also manage the port through a 49% shareholding in an Algerian-registered company.
Reports are that it could become a hub for Chinese trade traffic in the western Mediterranean.
