Access to the northern regions of Namibia is being opened up through ongoing investment in the regional roads network. Speaking at the official opening of the 98-kilometre tarred stretch on the Omafo Onandjaba Road in the north, Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba is quoted as saying “every year we continue to make strides by adding several kilometres to our road network.” China is both building the road and financing it through a US$80- million loan from the Exim Bank of China. Once completed the road will link Katima Mulilo and Ruacana along the northern border of Namibia. Pohamba said the road would serve as a backbone of the regional development corridor since it formed part of the Trans-Cunene corridor through Oshikango, and the Trans- Caprivi highway via Nkurenkuru and Rundu to Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi region.
