MSC opens ‘food grade’ warehouse in Beira

MSC Mozambique has opened a 10 000sqm warehouse in Beira which has been purpose designed and built for tobacco and food-grade cargo, according to Nicola del Vecchio, managing director of MSC Mozambique. It has been built alongside the company’s 3 500-TEU container park in Beira. Another parcel of land is being prepared, which will bring the warehouse and container facility up to 100 000sqm. The new warehouse has been built in two sections, which allows MSC to use one side for tobacco and dry foods and the other for handling other operations such as the packing of mineral commodities. A full range of landside logistics services is being offered, which includes the stuffing and destuffing of containers, storage, fumigation, customs clearing and forwarding. There is a weighbridge on the premises. Del Vecchio believes that the new facilities will help draw more cargo to the Beira Corridor, as there is a shortage of quality warehouse space in the port city. He says the port is amongst the most efficient in the region, improving vessel turnaround time and reducing time before berthing. MSC is able to keep as many containers in service in Mozambique as needed through its container repair facility in Beira, which is able to prepare containers to meet the high standards required by tobacco companies, he says.
