TransNamib and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) plan to increase the volume of containerised cargo transported by rail between Windhoek and Walvis Bay.
The companies marked the start of the collaboration with a soft launch at TransNamib’s WINCON Depot in Windhoek.
TransNamib said MSC, an existing customer, is committed to moving and growing its container cargo by rail. The immediate focus will be on using the WINCON facility to facilitate container movements between Windhoek and Walvis Bay.
The partners will also assess opportunities to further increase volumes and introduce services on additional routes.
“This collaboration with MSC is an important step in strengthening the role of rail in Namibia’s intermodal freight landscape,” said TransNamib Executive: Commercial and Marketing Kendall Swartz.
“By working closely with our clients, we are creating opportunities to grow container volumes on rail, improve connectivity between Windhoek and Walvis Bay and ultimately provide more efficient rail-based freight solutions to the market.”
TransNamib said the initiative is aligned with the expansion of the Namport Container Terminal, which could support further growth in containerised cargo movements.
The collaboration is part of TransNamib’s broader efforts to improve its rail freight services and increase the movement of goods by rail across Namibia.
