Mozambique to cut its international airport numbers

The Mozambique aviation authority, Airports of Mozambique (ADM), has announced that the country’s international airports will be cut from the present eight to only three.

The remaining three will be Maputo International Airport in southern Mozambique, Beira in the centre and Nacala in the north.

Nampula, Pemba, Vilanculos, Inhambane and Tete (Chingozi Airport) will no longer receive direct international traffic.

According to the Mozambican website for online news, Folha de Maputo, the main purpose of this measure is to transform Nacala International Airport, opened last year in the north of the country, into an international passenger hub, competing with airports in Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
