The Mozambican government has reaffirmed its commitment to modernising ports and logistics corridors to boost the economy and its position in regional and international trade.
Transport and Logistics Minister João Matlombe, speaking at the Association of Portuguese-Speaking Ports (APLOP) in Maputo recently, highlighted the country’s ideal location to become an important logistics hub for the region.
“Ports represent a driving force of the blue economy and an essential instrument for the sustainable growth of countries.
“The development of the port sector translates not only into economic gains, but also into the creation of concrete opportunities for citizens, impacting employment, social inclusion and improving living conditions.”
Matlombe said current global conditions demanded more efficient, integrated and resilient transport systems, and called for greater cooperation between countries to confront common challenges.
“We are here to learn, listen and, above all, strengthen cooperation between our countries.”
Matlombe reiterated the executive’s commitment to investing in the modernisation of port infrastructure, focusing on operational efficiency, safety and technological innovation.
“Efficiency, safety, and innovation are unavoidable imperatives to guarantee the competitiveness of our ports.”
APLOP president Manuel Neto described the meeting as a strategic opportunity to consolidate partnerships and align responses to transformations in the maritime-port sector.
“This conference is of particular importance for the future of our association and for the strategic positioning of ports in the context of the global maritime economy.”
The event focused on analysing global trends such as digitalisation, decarbonisation and the energy transition, as well as identifying new opportunities for cooperation among member countries.
Neto said strengthening cooperation within the Portuguese-speaking world could be crucial in transforming ports into platforms for regional development and integration.
“If we work together, our ports can assert themselves competitively on the global stage.”
