NISSAN, WHICH continues to dominate South African automotive exports to Africa, says it is possible to do profitable business in sub-Saharan Africa, providing you have the right infrastructure in place.
In 2000 four out of every ten vehicles exported from South Africa to the rest of the continent was a Nissan, according to official NAAMSA figures.
'Despite the numerous social and economic challenges facing many of the countries of Africa and which resulted in most other South African motor manufacturers reducing their exports to the continent in 2000, we increased our total exports to 4805 units - a rise of 21% over the 3971 units we exported in 1999, says Johan Kleynhans, vice president of exports at Nissan SA.
