AN UNUSUAL speciality at the logistics operation of Kodiak Shipping is the licensed movement of military equipment and personnel around Africa.
The company holds a permit from the National Arms Control Council (NACC) allowing it to position military deployments; is registered with the SA Police Services to carry firearms and import/export explosives; with the SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) under its particular conditions; and is an accepted part of the military defence complex.
Kodiak owns its own armed escort vehicles for moving military equipment and personnel to ports or airports Ð and is tasked with moving equipment for the SAPS and the SA military.
A main logistical exercise last year, CEO Colin Bowring told FTW, was the deployment of the Mozambique troops in the Nepad peace-keeping force to Burundi Ð with the redeployment and re-supply still in the pipeline.
But, while this is the companyÕs core business, it actually has a much wider range of products to offer.
The company is split into three divisions. One is the pure clearing and forwarding function; second is brokering military and general cargo deals; and the third its air charter division.
