The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has dredged quays 6, 7, 8 and 9 to allow for bigger vessels during scheduled maintenance dredging operations, which have restored the depth of the approach channels to those created by a 2016 capital dredging campaign.According to the MPDC quays 6, 7 and 8 have been deepened from -12metres to -16m, and quay 9 to -15 metres. Maintenance dredging, led by Jan de Nul Dredging Ltd, began in mid-October 2019. Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger Francesco di Giorgio and Water Injection Dredger Henri Pitot removed 1.5 million cubic metres of accumulated silt, mud and sand in four months, focusing on the Matola, Katembe, Polana, Xefina and Northern Channels.
