While construction of the new gas fields and the processing of gas is under way, many of the policy and strategic decisions will be made in Maputo – along with contracts and deals relating to the gas projects, according to Bruce Chapman, general manager of the Southern Sun Maputo. The hotel is the flagship of the three Tsogo Sun hotels in Mozambique. The other two are the StayEasy Maputo, which is farther along the beachfront road (Marginal) in the Mozambican capital, and the Tete Ferry Sun, in the heart of the Mozambican coalfield developments. “Maputo is a natural hub for decision makers for a number of reasons,” he told FTW. Many of the LNG deals have been fleshed out in the lounge, restaurant and conference rooms of the Southern Sun Maputo, which is a favoured meeting place for business. But, he adds, the LNG developments are not the only positive developments in the Mozambican economy. Construction and infrastructure investment are also picking up, and these will support growth in other sectors such as manufacturing, logistics and agriculture, he says.
