Maersk Line continues to be committed to the Mozambican market despite a general drop off in volumes through Maputo and Nacala in particular, according to Lee Brough, managing director of Maersk Mozambique.
The shipping line is working with the Maputo Corridor Logistics Initiative (MCLI) to promote the port of Maputo following the upgrading of the container terminal and the revision of rates. It is also working with local logistics companies to attract citrus exports back to the port. In Beira Maersk has introduced a “slightly bigger vessel” following the completion of the emergency dredging.
This has increased the capacity for container freight in and out of the port. Maersk is also watching developments in the port of Nacala closely to ensure that it is able to meet any increase in demand, he says.
