Transnet has informed South Africa’s freight industry that it remains hamstrung because of equipment challenges.
A statement sent out by the National Interaction Centre of Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) says: “Despite our ongoing efforts, we are still experiencing low availability of straddle carriers, which is impacting our operations and your expectations.”
The state-owned company which, over the years, has received wide condemnation from private-sector stakeholders for its apparent failure to adequately provide the necessary mechanical means to cater for South Africa’s logistical requirements, appeals for industry’s support in the statement.
TPT says that its focus has not wavered.
“Our team is working tirelessly to improve the reliability of our equipment across all operational areas.
“We are actively identifying and implementing solutions to address the issues at hand, and we are committed to restoring optimal availability as swiftly as possible.”
Although it’s not entirely clear what is meant by its closing words, the TPT statement says: “Necessary extension will be reviewed and communicated in due course.”
