Kenya pins its hopes on value-added leather exports

The performance of the timber furniture, textile apparel, and leather and leather products industries is of “significant importance” to Kenya's future job and wealth creation.

This according to a statement by the Kenyan Ministry of Industrialisation and Enterprise Development which released several value chain reports around this, in partnership with the World Bank and other key manufacturing sector stakeholders.

“For the leather value chain, we are aware that over 90% of our US$94-million leather exports are unfinished wet blue leather. This costs us over 5 000 jobs and up to US$250 million in gross domestic product (GDP) earnings. We want to ensure that we take full advantage of the largest livestock base of 60 million," said Kenya’s cabinet secretary for industrialisation, Adan Mohamed.

He pointed out that the launch of the value chain reports aligned with Kenya's Industrial Transformation Programme and Kenya's Vision 2030, which were established to stimulate Kenya’s economy.
