For Level 1 BEE company Katlego Global Logistics, BEE credentials have never been a selling point. “They’re useful, but they’re not the reason why customers choose Katlego,” says managing director Moses Maboi. Starting out as a oneman company, working from home, Katlego now employs 35 staff members and covers the full logistics spectrum – including clearing and forwarding, warehousing and distribution. In a market where you’re competing with global multinationals with established infrastructure and significant financial resources, it’s been a challenge, says Maboi. “At the start it was a big struggle because the industry wasn’t ready for a small guy,” he said. Raising the customs bonds, getting finance from the banks were all difficult to achieve – not many people were keen to support a new business whose early premises were a home address. But with lots of hard work and commitment Katlego Global Logistics has stood the test of time. “But it's not about our BEE status,” said Maboi. “Some of our customers have been with us for the past 12 years. And while our Level 1 status is a bonus, the real reason for their support is the service they get. “The nature of our specialisation in dangerous goods and arms and ammunition gives us an added advantage. We’re Part 108 approved and acquired our AVSEC/ RA 0353 approval and licence in January. In the next five months we’ll have our ISO accreditation.” CAPTION Moses Maboi
