South Africa’s logistics industry is mourning the death of Garry Marshall, 72, a veteran of the courier, aviation and supply-chain sectors, whose career spanned more than five decades.
Marshall, who served as CEO of the South African Express Parcel Association (SAEPA) from 2004, is being remembered as a pioneering industry leader, mentor and trusted adviser who played an important role in shaping the country’s courier and express parcel sector.
His career took him across Europe, Asia and South Africa and included senior roles in aviation, airfreight and express logistics.
A lifetime in logistics
After working for several airlines and serving in the South African Air Force, Marshall became a founding director of courier company XPS, which was a market leader during the 1980s. He later helped bring global express operator FedEx to South Africa and served as its local CEO for 12 years.
He also spent a year in Mumbai, India, where he worked on the privatisation of the city’s airport before returning to South Africa. Marshall later served as CEO of BidAir Cargo, where he oversaw domestic Boeing 737 freighter services on overnight express routes for the courier industry.
But it was through SAEPA that Marshall became one of the most recognisable voices of South Africa’s express parcel industry.
Appointed CEO in 2004, he championed fair competition, regulatory engagement and closer cooperation between the private sector, government and customs authorities.
SAEPA training and development representative Martine Maraschin said Marshall had been instrumental in transforming the association into a leading voice for the country’s courier and express parcel sector.
“Few people leave an imprint on an industry and its people as profound as Garry Marshall,” she said.
“To work alongside him was to understand what true leadership looks like – kind but firm, grounded in wisdom, and endlessly generous in spirit.”
Marshall also placed considerable emphasis on developing the next generation of logistics professionals. Under his leadership, SAEPA developed industry programmes ranging from entry-level training to university-level education, while he was instrumental in the design and evolution of a Da Vinci supply chain programme.
He also helped create opportunities for unemployed young people through learnerships and bursaries and spent a decade as a judge for the Logistics Achiever Awards, giving him broad insight into supply chain operations across South Africa.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Marshall helped lead industry efforts to maintain the movement of essential goods and services. He also became a vocal advocate for consumer protection against delivery scams and fraud.
His contribution was recognised in 2023 when he received the Life Achievement in Supply Chain Award at the Supply Chain Game Changers Awards.
A trusted voice and mentor
Transport Forum custodian Harry van Huyssteen described Marshall as “a true legend of the transport sector” whose knowledge extended across the industry.
“He was a person who could engage you in conversation about the industry with in-depth knowledge of anything. Garry also worked progressively and found solutions to complex challenges,” he said.
“His warm but firm personality made you feel at ease because he was always willing to listen and give good advice.”
Van Huyssteen described Marshall as a great mentor to him personally.
For Freight News features editor Liesl Venter, Marshall was more than an industry source. After countless interviews over the years, he became someone she could turn to for perspective, background and advice.
“Garry knew his industry. Really knew it. He had decades of experience in the courier, express parcel and aviation sectors, but what always struck me was that he never needed to prove how much he knew,” she said.
“He had a quiet, measured way about him and an ability to explain even the most complicated issues simply.”
Venter said Marshall always made time for journalists and gave conversations his full attention.
“Many will describe him as a quiet giant. It is an apt description. He was big in person and in stature, and he spoke with purpose. But quiet should never be mistaken for silent. When something mattered, Garry made his voice heard.”
That commitment continued even after he stepped back from full-time work. Venter said Marshall remained deeply involved in issues affecting the courier sector and, until the end, continued fighting the industry’s battle over sub-one-kilogram parcels “respectfully, diligently and persistently”.
Beyond his professional life, she remembered him as a devoted family man who spoke with immense pride about his children.
Southern African Association of Freight Forwarders CEO Juanita Maree described Marshall as a man of great integrity and an outstanding leader in South Africa’s supply chain, freight forwarding and logistics industry.
“His leadership, generosity of spirit and ability to bring people together earned him the respect and affection of colleagues and friends across the profession,” she said.
“A true gentle giant, Garry leaves an indelible legacy in the industry he served so faithfully and in the lives of the many people privileged to have known and worked alongside him.”
Garry’s family will hold a private funeral and memorial service. SAEPA is considering holding a separate industry memorial in his honour and will provide further details once arrangements have been confirmed.
