Hong Kong, which used to battle with Singapore for the title of the world’s biggest container port, is now facing bleak times.
In 2014 it ranked only No 4, trailing Shanghai, Singapore and Shenzhen.
And, with container throughput shrinking 9.5% in July this year it had recorded a drop in container volumes for the 13th straight month, and to record an all-time low in throughput.
It fell 9.3% to 1.75 million twenty-foot equivalent units compared to 1.93 million TEUs 12 months earlier. And in the first seven months it was down a cumulative 9.1% to 11.94 million TEUs.
