Hong Kong airfreight declines

Cargo volumes at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) fell 1.2% to 361 000 tonnes in August compared with the same month in 2014, according to the most recent data from the airport.

HKIA, the world’s busiest airfreight hub, has seen year-over-year declines in cargo throughput in each of the last six months.

The airport attributed the continued decrease in volumes primarily to a 5% year-over-year drop in transhipments.

“Exports registered a slight growth while imports decreased by 1% compared to the same month last year,” the airport said in statement. “Amongst the key trading regions, Mainland China and Taiwan registered the most significant drop in the month. Traffic to/from Europe grew most significantly compared to other key regions.”

Analysts noted that a large factor in the decline in Chinese traffic being exported via HKIA is probably the increasing connectivity among foreign carriers to Mainland China’s own airports.
