Global air network ‘more accessible and efficient’ - Iata

Global air connectivity continued to become more accessible and efficient as cargo volumes increased by 3.4% in 2018, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) revealed in its performance report on Wednesday.

According to Iata, air freight and mail tonne kilometres (FTKs) recorded a 3.4% increase compared to the 9.7% recorded in 2017.

Capacity increased by 5.2% and the freight load factor fell 0.8% to 49.3%.

Although the steady growth of air connectivity is highly encouraged, it does come with an environmental cost which airlines are committed to reducing, Iata director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac said.

“From 2020 we will cap net carbon emissions growth - by 2050 we will cut our net carbon footprint to half 2005 levels,” he added.
