Gauteng has proposed increases to motor vehicle registration and licence fees with heavy vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers among those affected.
The proposed tariffs are contained in Schedule 2 of the draft Gauteng Provincial Road Traffic Amendment Regulations, 2026, published in Gauteng Provincial Extraordinary Gazette No 247 on August 5.
Under the proposed amendments, a motor vehicle with a tare of 12 001kg or more will attract a base annual licence fee of R34 080, up 6.1% from R32 112.
An additional R2 820 will apply to every 500kg or part thereof above 12 000kg. This represents an increase of 6.3% from the current R2 652.
The base fee for a trailer or semi-trailer with a tare of 12 001kg or more will increase by 6.1% from R32 244 to R34 224.
The additional charge for every 500kg or part thereof above 12 000kg will rise by 10.1% from R2 664 to R2 932.
The draft also proposes increasing the motor vehicle registration fee from R228 to R240. The licence fee for motorcycles, motor tricycles and motor quadricycles will rise from R252 to R264.
Breakdown vehicles with a tare above 5 000kg will attract an annual licence fee of R12 060. The current fee is R11 364.
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport said the amendments intend to strengthen road traffic regulation, improve road safety and enhance compliance across the province.
Interested and affected parties have been invited to submit comments before September 23.
