As Cyril Ramaphosa took the oath of office on Saturday and pressure mounted on the president to appoint a cabinet vastly slimmer than the bloated administration he inherited from Jacob Zuma, the freight industry had a simple message for the new Minister of Transport. “We just need someone
to look out for our interests and important issues that are intrinsic to the smooth running of the country’s freight industry.” Gavin Kelly, acting CEO of the Road Freight Association, commended Blade Nzimande for the work he had done in heading up the DoT, especially when it came to
dealing with truck burning on the N3. “Whoever is appointed it’s important to have someone who knows the industry and who can adequately deal with matters such as safety and security, particularly concerning incidents of arson and violence we have seen on the N3,” Kelly said.
